Ginkgo has a total of over 40 isolated components, but only two are considered responsible for the medicinal effects of the herb: flavonoids and terpenoids. The former are plant antioxidants that act to protect the nerves, heart muscle, and retinal blood vessels. Terpenoids act by improving blood flow by dilating vessels and reducing platelet viscosity.
Against Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease: Many studies have shown that the Ginkgo plant has a very positive effect on memory. Thus this plant is very interesting for the treatment of people with Alzheimer’s or vascular dementia.

Intermittent claudication: Another interesting benefit is improving blood circulation that can help people who have intermittent claudication.
Glaucoma: One of the best results of ginkgo was in a study with people who have glaucoma, it was found that those who took 120 mg of the plant extract daily for 8 weeks had a good improvement in vision.
Memory: One of the main benefits is being able to improve the memory of people with dementia. Studies have found that the plant may have positive effects on memory whereas for other studies it appears that the plant acts only as a placebo. It is added in nutrition in fruit ice cream and soft drinks to improve memory and also to help improve cognitive performance even though it seems doubtful to scientists that small doses can actually improve memory.
Macular Degeneration: The flavonoids present in ginkgo help to improve or reduce problems in the retina, the back of the eye. Macular degeneration is an example of a disease that affects the retina and is a progressive and degenerative eye disease that can affect older adults.
Buzz: Some types of nerve damage or blood disorders may eventually lead to tinnitus. Studies have shown that ginkgo can moderately reduce the volume of this tinnitus.
